Me! Me! Me!

I am trying to 'be' a writer when I grow up. If I could only write good stuff with the speed and spontaneity of my everyday speak. Perhaps I should just go right to books on tape and nip the problem right here and now. But then there is the question of how to get the illustrations on tape. Each short (really short stories) has an illustration and since I am writing an entire collection of shorts, there will be a picture of sorts for each one.
Oops. Okay. Where. Was. I?!?
Oh Yeah! Typing, writing, sentences and such. Mixed with ideas, moments of greatness, feelings of insecurity about content of writing and oh, can't forget or put off, procrastination!
Ah nuts and jellybeans, I am me, Laurel aka Lo, Lola, silly girl who likes nice purses and anything in a blue box. Gee, that sounds shallow. But it's not really and neither am I. I love a nice, long talk over a latte, sunsets on the beach and strolling down the street after dinner at a sidewalk cafe (okay, now this sounds like a singles ad-not that there is anything wrong with that BUT I am not single:) But if you ever see me sitting at a sidewalk cafe and want to send over a Cosmo, I will forever be your friend.
Really? Okay, really I am just me. A quirky and often silly girl that plays grown up when she must but tries to keep it real while dealing with every day life.
I guess really I am a writer, a mother, a wife and a friend and I'm not perfect at any of them! My writing is a lot about my experiences as the child of a young and fragile mother, about a daughter left to find her own way at the age of seven (who said seven was lucky anyways? I prefer number thirteen:)
My mother was beautiful but young and confused and she really just lost her way. I am reminded of her every time I look in the mirror. My father was charming, invigorating, classy and loving and when I listen to The Beatles I see my Daddy. Short-changed in life as he left this world before we could roller skate down the big hill by our house, hand in hand.
I do some freelance writing for local and city papers including a somewhat regular column for my local weekly. It's fun and I get to write about whatever tickles my fancy and I like that! Sometimes I can be seen working Canadian Idol, Canada's Walk of Fame and a long, long time ago I was an extra on an ABC made for television movie called ' Mafia Princess' starring Susan Lucci and Tony Curtis. Oh, but back to writing. I also write for a few other mainstream magazines and online publications although my real and most genuine passion is my 'book' writing. I'm writing a collection of shorts (very short stories) based on my perspective and memories of things, of me and my life while growing up, through creative stories. Oh, and the best part of the collection is that if you don't like to read much, there will be illustrations. Yea! Pictures!
